FOR  A  GREEN  EARTH

EARTH  DAY, 22nd April 2011

On the occasion of Earth Day, Department of Environment, Government of Delhi, in association with Organising Committee Commonwealth Games 2011 celebrated the Day with the following activity:

Hon'ble Chief Ministerof Delhi, Mrs. Shiela Dixit spoke to students and teachers on Earth Day at Chief Minister House.

Three of our students got a chance to be present on the occasion and interact with the Chief Minister on issues concerning our Earth.

WHY EARTH DAY ?

 

Earth Day activities provide an opportunity to individuals and communities to focus on environmental problems. Earth Day activities will broaden the base of support for environmental programmes, rekindle public commitment and enroll participation from all sectors of society. These activities can be used to bring together people to act for the common good.

SUGGESTED ACTIVITIES FOR CELEBRATING EARTH DAY – 2011 

 

1.      Organization of Films and Slide shows on Environmental themes.

2.      Tree planting ceremonies of local tree species.

3.      Organization of Exhibitions and Fairs.

4.      Essay writing, Recitation and Poster making competitions on Environment.

5.      Organization of Street Plays, Folk Music, Songs, Dances and Shows on Environment.

6.      Morning Rallies by school children/NGOs.

7.      Creating Plant Nurseries in schools/colonies.

8.      Debates and lectures in schools/housing societies.

9.      Display of Posters in public places.

10.   Using Energy efficient appliances.

11.   Choosing products that can be recycled and reused.

12.   Walking or riding a bike.

Nights getting warmer in India
April 12, New Delhi: In last 100 years, the mean temperature has risen .82 degree C worldwide, and .51 degree C in India. However, India has seen sharp temperature rise in recent decades. Since 1970, minimum temperature rose up by .20 degree C/decade, faster than maximum temperature (.17 degree C). Across India, warming is sharpest during winter (.30 degree C/decade) and post-monsoon (.20 degree C) months.
