World Cup: Media Coverage

This project is aimed at opening students’ eyes to how the World Cup is covered in media over the world. In the UK football receives an enormous coverage both in the newspaper and on TV. Football stories dominate the sports sections of our newspapers and throughout the World Cup will likely dominate the front pages as well. Is this the same in other nations or are other sports more popular? Football stars are awarded massive celebrity status through their abilities on the pitch. They also receive notoriety for the actions off the pitch and the UK press love an opportunity to dig the dirt on the players and their personal lives! Is this the same in other nations or do your media focus on the sport above all else? In this project, I intend for my students to look at how the World Cup is covered by the media, but not just by the news in the papers and on TV. I would also like students to look at the influence the World Cup has on magazine articles. For example in the UK we have magazines aimed at girls and women called 'Heat' and 'Closer.’ These may focus on the Wives and Girlfriends (WAGS) of the players....fashion, gossip, parties etc. I would like this project to engage both girls and boys from all over the world so we can see how the World Cup influences what is reported in the media.
