I reflect on what I learned during the recent seminar in Tonsberg, Norway, organised by the Norwegian Centre for International Cooperation in Higher Education. The subject was “The Nature of Science”. I was previously involved with eTwinning projects but this Comenius contact seminar was my first experience of directly working with other teachers from Europe. Do we share the same issues with our students? Do we want the same achievements out of our students? Of course, we do. We want them to be the scientists of tomorrow by offering them purposeful learning. In Norway, they introduce the “budding researcher” terminology in their science classes. One representative from the Norwegian National Strategy demonstrated a simple experiment holding a conical flask with neck diameter smaller than a boiled egg. He had a candle and a match. The question was how do you insert and take out the egg from the conical flask without destroying the egg? The importance of describing what the student sees first before argumentation and solving the problem was evident.
My school has now formed links with schools from three European countries and the “budding researchers” will retrieve real information about environmental issues which affects their lives by communicating with each other. If science is a worldwide activity, let us bring our classrooms together around the world.
