Melbourne experience
i visited Melbourne, Australia, several years ago. they call Victoria state "the basket". it is greeeeeeeeen and rainy.( it was winter) people pay great concern to water consumtion, even though they have several resources like the Yara River ! They use rain water pouring from the roof tops into big barrels, so they can save water ! i liked alot; specially i come from Saudi Arabia, one of the driest countries in the world

Hi Sattam, Nice to hear from you and thanks for sharing your melbourne experience! Are there common methods of water conservation that everyone uses in Saudi Arabia? Is it a subject or part of a subject in the school curriculum? Thank you Chris

hi Chris on the contrary ! although the kingdom is a an almost-desert country, we don't have much "awareness" on water conservation, since the "price" of house water is very very cheap. it is rather expensive if u buy it from outside. but, at my home, i receive a water bill every month for about $5 only ! that's why people don't care! Also, the "awareness" is little because the rain is rare + no rivers ! ONLY water from Desalination plants !!! can u believe that ???

That’s really interesting Sattam, thanks! I thought people would be very aware of the issue and there would be policies on water usage/conservation. The monthly price is a surprise! That’s less than water rates where I live (where it feels like it never stops raining). It’s also interesting as I imagine desalination plants cost a lot of money to run?? Is it a similar story in Oman? I think it would be great if this 'save water with us' project developed into a project between countries in the region with students considering the issue and also water conservation. Maybe you could email YOUNIS A'SHABIBI and start something? Chris

I HAVE READ YOUR MESSAGES SO LATE. I AM INTERESTED IN WHAT YOU HAVE MENTIONED ABOUT THE TOPIC. ACTUALLY, WATER CONSERVING PROBLEM IS WIDELY SPREAD IN THE GULF COUNTRIES (GCC), THEREFORE GOVERNMENTS ARE DOING THEIR BEST TO TACKLE... I'M WORKING WITH MY STUDENTS TO FIND MORE CAUSES AND EFFECTS FOR WATER PROBLEMS.... YOUNIS

Many thanks for your message Younis! The research you are doing with your students sounds very interesting indeed. I hope you’ll be able to publish some of the results of your work on your project page. It would be wonderful to have input from Sattam’s students too. Kind regards Chris
