SHORT AND SWEET

Summary

Children love writing poems. These 'short and sweet' literal forms we can 'use' as the starting 'tool' to create a lot of different classroom activities. When? a) Any time we feel like doing something else apart from school textbooks b) Children like challenging oportunities to express themselves in other than usual way. My school colleague, Meri, gave me some students' literal works (colourful haiku poems) for me. I translated them into English and showed the 'little poets'. They love it. So, I've decided to share my experience with you.

Stage one: collect students' short poems in their mother tongue

Ask your children or your colleagues to give you some short poems written by your students.

Stage two: re-doing students short poems

As the 5 minute activity tell your students to re-do the short poems: to visualise the contents, to add one more line, to translate into another foreign language, to give them some tasks when the poem IS translated into English. Students can use opposites and - get a completely different poem. Changing form into another one can be their homework, as well

Stage three: 'new-born' poems' display

Presentation of their new 'products', a display should be the final stage. Put the new 'short and sweet' 'products' all around and let them read, discuss, find the most interesting one, most unusual ... It can be fun!
