About Us...We are a mixed comprehensive school for ages 11-16. The school is a small, rural, community maintained school with approximately 540 students currently on roll.

What I teach...I teach Design and Technology specialising in Resistant Materials (design and make creative products using workshop tools and materials such as wood, metal and plastic).

What I hope to achieve...Share Design and Technology project ideas (including photos) with other countries around the world.
Projects we currently teach our students...

Year 7 (11-12 years): Fridge Magnet Project (6 weeks).

Project Overview:
This unit of work involves students designing, making and evaluating a fridge magnet. Almost every home has a telephone and often we need to take a message for someone who might not be in. A note can be written on a scrap piece of paper but it can get easily lost. So a system to keep telephone messages safe would solve this problem.

Learning Objectives
By the end of this module students will be able:
- To design a product to meet a specific purpose.
- To apply skills they have learnt to produce a quality product.
- Understand the properties and uses of common woods and plastics.
- Know how to use workshop tools and equipment sensibly and safely (including vacuum former, pillar drill and scroll saw).
- Know and understand workshop rules and health and safety.
- Conduct appropriate research and product analysis using ICT.
- To annotate their design ideas and develop their designing capabilities.
- Know about the design process.
- Be able to successfully evaluate their work at different stages.
- Know how to use Computer Aided Design (CAD).
Year 8 (12-13 years): Balancing Toy Project (6 weeks).

Project Overview:
This unit of work involves students designing, making and evaluating a balancing toy. Everyone gets bored, especially young children. They need toys to play with to keep them occupied and to help them learn. So a fun and interesting product to keep a young child occupied at home or to help them learn would prevent them becoming bored.

Learning Objectives
By the end of this module students will be able:
- To design a product to meet a specific purpose.
- Produce a quality product.
- Be able to braze (join metals) safely.
- Know and understand the properties and uses of common metals.
- Know about different methods of finishing and protecting metal.
- Know how to use workshop tools and equipment sensibly and safely (including brazing hearth, pillar drill, disc sander and scroll saw).
- Know and understand workshop rules and health and safety.
- Conduct appropriate research and product analysis using ICT.
- To annotate their design ideas and develop their designing capabilities.
- Know about the design process.
- Be able to successfully evaluate their work at different stages.
- Know how to use CAD.
Year 9 (13-14 years): Clock Project (6 weeks).

Project Overview:
This unit of work involves students designing, making and evaluating a clock. Students will choose a theme for their project and will use a minimum of two different materials (which could include wood, metal, plastic, textiles, glass, paper or card).

Learning Objectives
By the end of this module students will be able:
- To investigate possible themes for their clock design.
- To successfully evaluate existing products.
- To design, make and evaluate a clock.
- Understand how important it is to choose the correct materials when planning a visually appealing project.
- To use and reinforce practical skills previously learnt and health and safety.
- To draw using orthographic projection (possibly by using CAD).
Year 10 and 11 (14-16) GCSE Resistant Materials.

This course provides opportunities for candidates to develop an awareness of the nature and significant importance of Design and Technology in a rapidly changing society. It enables candidates to develop their application of knowledge, skills and understanding of Resistant Materials Technology within an overall design and make based approach.

The content of the specification provides a coherent, satisfying and worthwhile course of study for candidates, whether they wish to pursue the study of Design and Technology in the future or whether it will be their last experience of studying the subject.

The specification consists of 60% internal assessment (coursework) and 40% examination. Candidates take one examination paper. For internal assessment candidates will be expected to produce a resistant materials product that can be marketed. The product will be realised in school/college with the facilities that are available.
