'The New World is a project that we all complete in Year 7 and 8 for one
hour a week in Mathematics and one hour in design and technology. It
helps us to use the skills from these subjects in the real world. The
photos show some of the lesson and work that we do to complete our
challenges. The PowerPoint shows what our lessons look like. This is a
lesson where we had to test the shelters that we had built to see
whether they could stay up on the island.'

Romeo and Juliet Drama Project visit to Tongling 2010_
objects: 2
On the 25th March 2010 we set off to visit our link school, No 12 Middle School in Tongling, Anhui , China.
The aims of the visit were to complete work on several current joint projects that included :-
Humanities
Looking at housing in China in the city and countryside.
Business Studies.
You can only visit a factory in China if you first apply to the Government for permission. Pupils were lucky to get the opportunity to visit the biggest factory in China producing copper sheets. This is a joint China /Japan company using some of the most up to date automated processes. Unfortunately, while we were allowed a tour of the factory we were not allowed to interview the workers or ask them questions about their working conditions.
Education
One of the main reasons for making the visit was so that students could better understand the Chinese Education system. For this reason they joined in normal lessons.
They visited a Junior school that is also linked to one of Wade Deacon’s feeder Junior Schools in England.
Music
Wade Deacon students are composing music in a Chinese style. These compositions will be played by students at No 1 2Middle School on traditional instruments. We listened to a concert by these pupils.
Drama
The British Council have approved our Joint Curriculum Drama Project on Romeo and Juliet. Chinese schools do not at the moment teach drama, however this is our fourth year to have a Teacher from No 12 Middle School stay at Wade Deacon . Each Teacher has received some Drama training and they are now beginning to introduce it in No 12 Middle School.
Ms Goulding and Mr Mealey from Wade Deacon taught a workshop based on Romeo and Juliet.
Languages.
The visit was a great opportunity for students to try out their language skills in both English and Mandarin
Conclusion
This was our second visit to No 12 Middle School and it was very successful. The leader of the Tour Mr Ian Kirkham, and the other staff, have worked tirelessly to ensure that everything ran smoothly, which it did. Both schools agree that students are benefiting from these Joint Projects, and academic standards are rising. Staff are enthusiastic about starting a linked project and welcome this aspect of their Professional Development.
We appreciated the help given to us by Tongling ChunHui Tour Service.
