Teachers and Creativity

Summary

This project would involve teachers sharing their most creative piece of work on a weekly basis. This could be something that they had created or something that a class or a pupil in their class produced. It is anticipated that a folder of ideas would steadily build which would then be made available to further partner countries and participants.

Week 1

As our teachers, and therefore pupils are currently on their 2 week Autumn break, I have decided to add an idea that I have used in the past to encourage creative writing with upper primary pupils. Resources Interactive whiteboard ( or the ability to broadcast to all machines. Free clips from video games, downloaded from the web. (I used 20 seconds worth for a 45 minute lesson) Collaborative Writing. This is teacher driven. Set up the board so that everyone can see. I also dim the lights for effect. Let the children watch the 20 second clip with sound. Now go back and watch again stopping every few seconds to question and describe the action. I found that everyone has an opinion, everyone has to share and come to an agreement of what they interpret the images to be showing, everyone is proud of what we all produce. An alternative, on another occasion would be to allow the children time to scribe their own interpretation of events.

Integrating ICT into your daily writing programme...a New Zealand Example
Let me start of by saying a big Kia Ora from christchurch New Zealand(that's hello in New Zealand...not the orange drink you may have heard of). My name is Justin Perriam and I currently teach a class of 25 7year old children. Below is an activity that I used with my children last term. Feel free to e-mail me if you have any questions.

Last term we had a focus on procedural writing, especially writing instructions. I decided to integrate ICT into the unit by using digital cameras and a really cool programme called Comic Life .

The children had to create a series of instructions on how to complete a task (we started off with a simple task like doing a chest pass with a ball, as this tied in with our p.e. unit. the children were then able to select a topic of their own choice. The children wrote their steps down on the planning sheet and drew a picture beside each step, showing what a photo of the step would look like. They then went outside with digital cameras and took the corresponding photos.

I found this activity worked really well and gave the children a better understanding of how written language and photos can be combined to add effect and meaning to a topic.

Attached are examples of our storyboard, evaluation sheet and some completed examples.
