A workable organisational model is a prerequisite for successful collaborative projects. It is essential that pupils know precisely how they are to work, what the task limits are, the degree of freedom they have to develop their projects as they wish, and the level of support they can expect.
In this section of the Project Toolkit you should consider carefully:
- Organisational issues
- Safety online
- Copyright issues and permissions
Organising and guiding pupils
- Organisation of pupils including group sizes
- Will pupils work individually or in groups?
- How will groups be organised? Will the teacher decide the members of each group? Will each group contain a technical leader?
- Task parameters:
- Will tasks and final outcomes be determined by the teacher?
- Will pupils have freedom to decide how to build their project or work within a broad theme-based framework?
- Will there be whole-class debate around major themes and sub-themes?
- Will there be guidance documentation for pupils to access on the school network, or the project page at eLanguages, or in hard copy?
- Organisation of project: logistics
- Will your project be short or long?
- Will your project be done in class time or will you need extra time with your pupils?
- Will you have access to the ICT room or do you work in a classroom with permanent access to the school network and the Internet, perhaps via a wireless network?
- Will your partner schools have the same level of access as you?
- If not, how will this affect the time scale you envisage for your project?
- Will all pupils be able to participate? For example, if you wish pupils to work independently on the Internet outside of school, are you sure they can all do this? What would be an alternative?
- Do you have all permissions necessary? For example, if you wish to post photos or video of pupils, colleagues, pupils’ family members on the project page, do you have the consent of parents and all others affected?
