Interface icons HOWTO

This is a general reference explaining the different icons that appear within the eLanguages system. If you are not sure what a particular icon signifies, you should look it up within this guide or position your mouse over the icon to see a short description or 'tool tip' explaining its purpose.

Navigation icons

Navigation icons are interface buttons that help you navigate through the system

A questionmark icon representing the system helpHelp system and HOWTOs.
This icon, represented by a question mark, gives access to the system HOWTOs, similar to this page. The HOWTOs cover all aspects of using the system. HOWTOs display in a separate window to allow users of windowing system to view the help topic information in conjunction with the system page to which it refers.
A printer with a page emerging from the topPrint
Reformats the page to remove unnecessary display elements and make printing easier.
An envelopeEmail
Send a reference to this page via email to a friend, or yourself as a reminder.
An eyeWatch
Set up a watch (email notification) on this page. You will be emailed whenever changes are made to the content of the page.
The letter R,S and SRSS
Displays the page as a RSS web feed.
A plusOpen thread in forum
Appears in a forum and allows you to open a thread of messages.
A minusClose thread in forum
Appears in a forum and allows you to close a thread of messages.

Editing icons

You use the editing icons to add, edit or delete any content you add to a project, your hello page or any other page you can edit. You have edit rights to a page if the edit icon appears in the top right corner of a page.

A SpannerEdit a page or resource.
This icon appears when you are in normal mode for a page and have editing privileges on a page. When applied to a page "edit" mode might include the ability to add, change or delete existing content or change the name and layout of the page itself. Select this icon to enter editing mode. When applied to a resource, edit mode allows you to change the properties of that resource such as its name, description and content.
lightening boltReturn to normal mode
This icon appears when you are in editing mode. Clicking it returns you to the view of the page normally seen by users who do not have editing privileges on the page.
A claw hammerProperties
Indicates that you can change the properties of a page. This privilege allows the user to change the page title, metatext, layout and stylesheet that applies to the page.
A page with a plus sign in the cornerAdd
Indicates where you can add resources such as text, images, picture galleries etc.
A pair of scissorsCut
Allows you to "cut" content from the page into a temporary storage area referred to as the clipboard.
A page with a duplicate copy superimposedCopy
Indicates that you can copy this resource for use elsewhere in the system. Items which are copied are stored in the clipboard until they are pasted into another location.
A clipboardPaste
Indicates that you can paste items from your clipboard at this location.
A trash canDelete
Appears when you have the ability to delete the resource.
An open padlockPermissions - World readable
Appears when you have administrative privileges over a resource and provides access to the permissions list for the object. This icon signifies that the object to which it is connected is world readable.
A closed padlockPermissions - Restricted Access
Appears when you have administrative privileges over a resource and provides access to the permissions list for the object. This icon signifies that the object to which it is attatched has restricted access.

Add or edit the translation for a resource.

Enlarge the display size of an image by 2O%
A minusReduce
Reduce the display size of an image by 20%

Resource type icons

These icons represent the resources available on the system.

A speech bubbleForum
Indicates a discussion forum for exchanging a series of ideas.
A tabbed folderFolder
A container for organising other resources.
A page with the corner turned downPage
A webpage.
A newspaperNews
A scrollable news browser to display headlines and short news items.
A pictureImage
An embedded image.
A series of pictures hung togetherGallery
A gallery browser to display a series of linked images
Lowercase letter iInformation
Page and project information showing the names of page contributors.
Uppercase letter TText
Textual elements such as section headings and paragraphs of text.
Generic fileFile
Generic icon to represent an uploaded file.
Links of a chainLink
A hypertext link to an internal or external webpage.
A ballot boxPoll
A simple polling utility.

Microsoft Word iconMicrosoft Word file
A document in the Microsoft Word file format.
Microsoft Excel iconMicrosoft Excel file
A speadsheet in the Microsoft Excel file format.
Microsoft Powerpoint iconMicrosoft Power Point file
A presentation in the Microsoft PowerPoint file format.
Adobe PDFPDF
A document in the cross-platform Portable Document Format from Adobe.
JPEGJPEG image
An image in the widely supported JPEG format.
GIFGIF image
An image in the widely supported GIF format.
A movie cameraVideo file
A generic icon for different video file types.
A series of musical notesSound
A generic icon for different sound file formats
