We had our first snow for over a year today - it was 6 cm deep at my house, but there was none when I got to school. My house is about 25 km from the school and no snow had fallen at school.

School names

many thanks for your seasonal messages. The Christmas traditions work you sent arrived jjust in time to be studied by the children (who were -of course - very impressed)and our up on two of our display boards. My compliments to the teachers and the students involved in putting this together. I am intrigued by the title of your school, which sounds very official. Does the school have another name? How do schools in Poland get their names?

School name
Edyta
We are very glad that your students liked our Christmast projects. As for the school name. "Szkoła Podstawowa" means primary school. In Poland schools chose their own names or patrons. Thay are usually charcters from Polish history or people who are famous for their contribution to the Polish culture (poets, writers etc.) Our school had a name and a patron. It was country's air defence military unit. Since they thay were closed down, we lost our patron.

SHROVE TUESDAY
Edyta Markowska
In Poland, we do not have pancake Tuesday, but as it is the last day before the lent, we have fun going out and it is called "herring" evening, because we eat a lot of herrings. And Ash Wednesday is the first day of the lent, so we go to church and have our heads sprinkled with ash. We do not eat meat on that day.

Saints days

PAUL HIGGS
Great Britain is made up of England, scotland, Wales and Northeren ireland. each of these countries has it's own patron saint, St George for England, St. Andrew for Scotland, St. David for Wales and St. Patrick for Northern Ireland. We celebrate each of these on separate days. Do you have a patron saint for Poland? Who is it? How do you celebrate and on what date?

polish patron
Edyta Markowska
Poland has two saint patrons: saint Stanislaw and saint Wojciech. They were both bishops. The former lived in the 11th century, the latter in the 10th. They were very religious and both were killed by pagans. Unfortunatelly, we celebrate only their days in churches, but they are not very popular. Now, the church officials think of "establishing" one patron, who would be popular and better known to all Polish people. They shouldn't have a problem. Our beloved John Paul!
